Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente
"Space Opera! Exactly what Catherynne Valente’s new brilliant hoot of a novel is about! Aliens arrive (weird and nutty ones), and they have serious doubts if humans are really civilized. Their test: a human band has to compete in the galactic version of Eurovision and not finish dead last. Our champion: Decibel Jones, a washed out glam-rock David Bowie has-been. The result: great lunacy and fun! And, along the way, an unending stream of the best bon-mots since Christopher Moore! Space Opera has the funniest opening line of any novel I know of. And that’s just the beginning. Enthusiastically recommended!" -Bookseller David
Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody
Ace of Shades leads you down the dangerous back alleys of a place where kindness can be found behind masks of cruelty and the truths you uncover can destroy and save you. With this beautiful game of life and death, Amanda’s gritty writing solidified for me my love of the authors talent as a story teller. She takes her time building this darkly twisted tale knowing when to slow down and then escalate the narrative, giving readers a city of sin they won’t want to leave and a band of characters they’ll want more of after the last page. I loved the Las Vegas feel of certain parts of the city combined with the gang politics and fantasy setting.” - Bookseller Constance
Science Fiction / Fantasy (paperback)
School for Psychics by K.C. Archer
“Teddy Cannon is a screw up. She has gotten herself banned from every casino in Las Vegas, kicked out of Stanford, and in deep trouble with a Vegas bookie to whom she owes hundreds of thousands of dollars. But she is a screw up with a gift. She can tell when a person is lying. When a mysterious stranger recruits her for the School of Psychics she is in so much trouble that she has no other choice but to follow him there. Her training ignites her in ways she did not expect and her future becomes tied to this unexpected place and the friends she meets there. This first entry in what is sure to be a fast moving series offers something a little different (and definitely entertaining!)” - Bookseller Terry
Mystery / Suspense Thriller
Paris by the Book by Liam Callanan
“What are the stages of grief? Can love evolve into something unhealthy, or become an obsession? Leah Eady thought she had the perfect marriage, the perfect family, the perfect life. Until she didn’t. Until Robert, her husband and the father of two teenage girls, went for a jog and never returned. Following little clues like breadcrumbs, she and her two teenage daughters leave Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Paris, France, trying to second-guess the footsteps of the missing husband and father. They are a family trying to reinvent themselves and move forward – invest in a bookstore, start school, make new friends... Robert, missing and missed, is reflected in every action his family takes; he haunts every page of this novel. As readers keep turning pages, their hearts will break just like mine did.” - Guest Reviewer Sandra Hale
Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen
“This book is a fast, easy read which surprised me. It is scary and traumatizing. And riveting. I would love to meet Sara again – if she survives.”
