Spring Story Sensations in San Diego

Event date:
Wednesday, March 8, 2017 - 7:30pm

The focus is on fantasy at our Spring Story Sensations event. Erika Lewis’s writing credentials include a graphic novel, The 49th Key, currently being featured in Heavy Metal Magazine, and on-line comic Firebrand, with partner Jessica Chobot. Erika’s debut novel introduces Venice, CA teenager Ethan Makkai, who chafes against his overly protective mother until he discovers they are fugitives from the hidden magical world of Tara, and he must embark on a quest to rescue her when she is taken hostage in a Game of Shadows.

R.A. Salvatore’s Hero brings Drizzt, his Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms drow, to the final quest that began in Archmage and continued in Maestro. Hero contains all of the storytelling magic that has made the adventures of Drizzt Do’Urden one of the bestselling fantasy series of all time, with action, adventure, camaraderie and family. Bob will also have a limited quantity of copies of his DemonWars: Reformation Core Rule Book, created with sons Bryan and Geno, available.

Sheryl Scarborough’s bio notes, “My work has appeared in just about every medium you can imagine, from TV scripts (including “Dirtysomething” for Disney’s Darkwing Duck!) to series concepts, comic books, children’s books, business plans and magazine articles. I have written theater and restaurant reviews in exchange for great seats and free food. I have even been a ghost-writer for a celebrity, which is more work and less haunting than it sounds. Now, I’m writing what I truly love, which are YA thrillers and mysteries with a forensic twist.” See Christine’s review of To Catch a Killer on our website.

Erin Blake has one of those names. A name that, like Natalee Holloway or Elizabeth Smart, is inextricably linked to a grisly crime. As a toddler, Erin survived for three days alongside the corpse of her murdered mother, and the case--which remains unsolved--fascinated a nation. Her father's identity unknown, Erin was taken in by her mother's best friend and has become a relatively normal teen in spite of the looming questions about her past.

Fourteen years later, Erin is once again at the center of a brutal homicide when she finds the body of her biology teacher. When questioned by the police, Erin tells almost the whole truth, but never voices her suspicions that her mother's killer has struck again in order to protect the casework she's secretly doing on her own.

Inspired by her uncle, an FBI agent, Erin has ramped up her forensic hobby into a full-blown cold-case investigation. This new murder makes her certain she's close to the truth, but when all the evidence starts to point the authorities straight to Erin, she turns to her longtime crush (and fellow suspect) Journey Michaels to help her crack the case before it's too late.

Twenty-five stood in a line, cloaked in thick brown robes with voluminous sleeves and large hoods that were pulled low to hide their faces. Quiet and humble, they kept their heads bowed, their shoulders stooped, and their hands folded before them, though not a digit showed from beneath the folds of cloth, not a flash of flesh in the whole line.

“Piety, dignity, poverty”, the old Father Abbot intoned in his nasal voice. He stood alone on the balcony above the main entrance of St.-Mere-Abelle, the most prominent monastery in all the kingdom of Honce-the-Bear, in the northern temperate zone of Corona. Intertwined with the rocky cliffs of the southeastern coast, St.-Mere-Abelle had stood solemn and dark for nearly a millennium, with each generation of monks adding their toil and craftsmanship to the already huge structure. Its gray rock walls seemed to grow right from the solid stone, an extension of the earth’s power.

“Do you willingly enter the service of God?” the Father Abbot asked.

The twenty-five responded with a unified “Yes, say I!”
