Kristin Cashore and Aditi Khorana sign in San Diego

Mysterious Galaxy offers a trio of young adult authors exploring choices, consequences, friendships, and feminism. Kristin Cashore grew up on a farm and was constantly reading. When she wasn’t reading she was day dreaming, and these years were the ones that initially set her up to become the bestselling author that she is today, including her tales of the Graceling Realm. Kristin has lived in a multitude of locales, from Florida to London to Sydney, but she is currently back on the East Coast where she was born. Her new book Jane, Unlimited per her website is “ a kaleidoscopic novel about grief, adventure, storytelling, and finding yourself in a world of seemingly infinite choices. It's also about umbrellas and umbrella-making :o).” Aditi Khorana spent parts of her childhood in India, Denmark, as well as the New England coast. She is currently a marketing executive for various Hollywood studios and was formerly a journalist for ABC News, CNN, and PBS. Per her website, her new novel, Library of Fates, is a “ feminist historical fantasy, set in ancient India, and tells the story of a louche, misogynistic dictator overthrowing an idyllic kingdom, and the women who fight to wrench it back from his hands.” Frequent guest host Kirsten White is a special friend of the store ; her most recent young adult series is The Conqueror’s Saga and the second book, Now I Rise, just came out.

Jane has lived an ordinary life, raised by her aunt Magnolia--an adjunct professor and deep sea photographer. Jane counted on Magnolia to make the world feel expansive and to turn life into an adventure. But Aunt Magnolia was lost a few months ago in Antarctica on one of her expeditions.

Now, with no direction, a year out of high school, and obsessed with making umbrellas that look like her own dreams (but mostly just mourning her aunt), she is easily swept away by Kiran Thrash--a glamorous, capricious acquaintance who shows up and asks Jane to accompany her to a gala at her family's island mansion called Tu Reviens.

Jane remembers her aunt telling her: "If anyone ever invites to you to Tu Reviens, promise me that you'll go." With nothing but a trunkful of umbrella parts to her name, Jane ventures out to the Thrash estate. Then her story takes a turn, or rather, five turns. What Jane doesn't know is that Tu Reviens will offer her choices that can ultimately determine the course of her untethered life. But at Tu Reviens, every choice comes with a reward, or a price.

For Tara Krishnan, navigating Brierly, the academically rigorous prep school she attends on scholarship, feels overwhelming and impossible. Her junior year begins in the wake of a startling discovery: A message from an alternate Earth, light years away, is intercepted by NASA. This means that on another planet, there is another version of Tara, a Tara who could be living better, burning brighter, because of tiny differences in her choices.

The world lights up with the knowledge of Terra Nova, the mirror planet, and Tara's life on Earth begins to change. At first, small shifts happen, like attention from Nick Osterman, the most popular guy at Brierly, and her mother playing hooky from work to watch the news all day. But eventually those small shifts swell, the discovery of Terra Nova like a black hole, bending all the light around it.

As a new era of scientific history dawns and Tara's life at Brierly continues its orbit, only one thing is clear: Nothing on Earth--or for Tara--will ever be the same again.
