In the 1950s, the CIA began a clandestine operation known as Project MKULTRA, in which unwitting American citizens were subjected to insidious drug and mind-control experiments. In the two decades the program ran, a nation's trust was betrayed and countless lives--and families--were destroyed. Haunted and inspired by these real-life events, acclaimed novelist Scott O'Connor has crafted a riveting, tour de force literary thriller that vividly imagines the devastating emotional legacy of such a program through the eyes of one of its more unexpected victims.

Nunn's new novel is a dark book involving psychiatric mystery, sexual obsession, fractured identities, and terrifyingly realistic violence--a tale told amid the back streets of California's Bay Area, far from the cleansing breezes of the ocean. This is a landscape where nameless persons lose their identities and find new ones after days of sex in a motel room, where homeless war veterans create neo-hippie encampments--this is California noir, this is Kem Nunn country. It's not pretty, it's not sweet, but it is disturbing and unforgettable.

He has a score to settle and a promise to keep--both of which lead to a murderous trail linking the antiques world of Brighton, the crime fraternity of Spain's Marbella, and New York.
