"The world needs my beauty. No matter how many times they tried to rid me out the world because of their jealousy, I will always come back." - Caz, @Cazlaur on TikTok, inspired by Tomie.

Tomie is beautiful; perhaps the most beautiful girl to ever exist in the entire world, in all of time. A sort of beauty that feels uncomfortably familiar, eerily inviting and all consuming. A young woman with long, silky black hair, a small beauty mark and a beautifully bored expression to bore right through your very soul, Tomie is the perfect example of not always trusting what your eyes see, but what your gut feels. Not much is known of her origin, though she is a regenerative demon of a sort that utilizes both her rage for those who have wronged her and her ability to control others with low-effort sexual appeal as catalysts for her magical abilities. Something about Tomie drives men mad with desire to take ownership of her, and to kill her, and not always in the order you would think. A particularly interesting read through the modern lens, especially for readers like myself that are active in intersectional political work, due to the constant abuse and use of problematic tropes utilized by Ito-- though it gives fascinating insight into the ways manga has changed, and the ways it has stayed the same when interacting with "beautiful" women in fictional spaces. Though compared to his other works as not as exciting nor groundbreaking, Tomie is a story near and dear to Junji Ito-- "When I was in junior high school, a boy in my class died in a traffic accident. It just felt so odd to me that a classmate who was so full of life should suddenly disappear from the world, and I had the strange feeling that he would show up again innocently" he answered when asked about his inspiration for her character. As for her personality? "Tomie lives her life completely as she wishes. She's haughty yet she captivates men...they envy Tomie's freedom, that's what I think..."(grapee.jp interview).

Will you be captivated by her beauty too?
