Parodies in books and movies have been around almost as long as their respective mediums, either commenting on the ridiculousness of a respective work or cashing in on the parodied property’s connected notoriety. In the porn industry, the subject of parody has long since carved out a unique and forever niche. In I Was Flesh Gordon: Fighting the Sex Ray and Other Adventures of an Accidental Porn Pioneer, longtime actor and Flesh Gordon himself Jason Williams recalls his early years living in conservative Orange County as a former athlete, wanting to catch that big break on the silver screen. His big break appears in the form of porn-spoof that helps him become as McFarland Publishing’s website states, “the most known unknown actor in movies.” The book is also co-written by Derek McCaw, who asides from being a writer is also an actor, comedian, teacher, and runs the website Fanboy Planet.

Hollywood, the 1970s. Jason Williams, a former college athlete from very conservative Orange County, hopes to become a film actor in a town where everyone's looking for a break. He jumps at the chance for the lead in a science fiction parody, an X-rated (later R) spoof of Flash Gordon. Sure, he has to get naked on camera--but so do lots of cute girls. He has no idea the production will be the start of an odyssey that will take him through the highs and lows of Tinseltown, and make him the most known unknown in movies-- Flesh Gordon!.
