Please welcome as we host comic creators and graphic novelist Damian Duffy and John Jennings. Damian is a cartoonist, scholar, writer, curator, teacher, and a Glyph Comics, Eisner Comics, and Bram Stoker Award-winning, #1 New York Times bestselling graphic novelist. John is a curator, graphic novelist, editor, design theorist, and Professor of Media and Culture Studies at the University of California at Riverside who examines the visual and culture of race in various media forms including film, illustrated fiction, and comics and graphic novels. Together, they adapted Octavia Butler’s bestselling literary science-fiction masterpiece, Kindred, into a graphic novel, and was published in 2018. Now the two men have joined again to adapt Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, a dystopian story about a woman fleeing Los Angeles as America spirals into chaos. Lauren Olamina and her family live in one of the only safe neighborhoods remaining on the outskirts of the city. When fire destroys her compound, Lauren’s family is killed, forcing her out into a world that is fraught with danger. What begins as a fight for survival soon leads to something much more: the birth of a new faith, and a startling vision of human destiny.
