While John Billheimer served as the Vice President of a small consulting firm, an early research project took him to the coalfields of his native West Virginia. He observed poverty, independence, and resourcefulness that would inspire the characters of his debut novel, The Contrary Blues, a funny and sometimes touching mystery series featuring Owen Allison, a failure analyst. Primary Target is the sixth and latest installment. Owen crosses paths with Red Davison, the once California governor who destroyed Owen’s consulting firm years ago. Now, Red’s son Jason is the leading candidate for his party’s presidential nomination. As Owen begins an investigation into potential bogus absentee ballots, what follows are missing political aides, a suicide case turned murder, and a bomb. John’s other novel in discussion, Hitchcock and the Censors, explores the legendary director’s interactions with the Motion Picture Production Code Office, who on overage demanded 22.5 changes per Hitchcock film.
