Like T. Jefferson Parker, Steve Hamilton writes both an acclaimed series – the Alex McKnight mysteries – and standalone thrillers, including Night Work and The Lock Artist . The title character, Michael, survived something horrible when he was a child. Now in his late teens, he has two talents – drawing and safecracking / lockpicking. The first may help him get the girl of his dreams … if the latter doesn’t get him in trouble with the law or killed, once the wrong people discover it. (See Terry’s review below.) Both Jeff and Steve have a fine collection of awards to their names, including the prestigious Edgar Award, as well as being regional favorites.

I loved this story, told by a damaged kid/adult named Michael who hasn’t spoken a word in 10 years. At eight years old he is orphaned and sent to live with his Uncle Lito in Michiga. He never fits in -- not in his community, not in school, and certainly not at home with his bachelor uncle who owns and operates a liquor store behind which the two of them also live. He does discover that he has two talents. He loves to open locks and he is a skilled artist. Both of these talents begin to open doors for him when he is 17 ... some welcome and some … not so much. But both skills will define his life and his future.
The story of the Lock Artist is simultaneously told by Michael as a 17-year-old, an 18-year-old, and as a 28-year-old. It is a clever way to tell his story and I loved the multiple view points from a single character.

In an unprecedented literary event, Steve Hamilton's "A Cold Day In Paradise" has hit mystery's Double Play, winning the two most prestigious honors in the business-- the Edgar and Shamus Awards for Best First Novel. Now, open its covers and see for yourself why this extraordinary novel has galvanized the literary and mystery community as no other book before it...
Other than the bullet lodged less than a centimeter from his heart, former Detroit police officer Alex McKnight thought he had put the nightmare of his partner's death and his own near-fatal injury behind him. After all, Maximilian Rose, convicted of the crimes, has been locked in the state pen for years, But in the small town of Paradise, Michigan, where McKnight has traded his badge for a cozy cabin in the woods, a murderer with Rose's unmistakable trademarks appears to be back to his killing ways. With Rose locked away, McKnight can't understand who else would know the intimate details of the old murders-- not to mention the signature blood-red rose left on his doorstep. And it seems like it'll be a frozen day in Hell before McKnight can unravel the cold truth from a deadly deception in a town that's anything but Paradise.
