Janni Lee Simner, author of last year’s post-apocalyptic fairy tale, Bones of Faerie, joins Beth in the spotlight at 11:00 AM. Janni’s new novel, Thief Eyes, is a contemporary fantasy based on the Icelandic sagas, Njal’s Saga in particular. A teen from Arizonea, in Iceland to try to find her own answers about the abrupt disappearance of her mother and the secrets her father seems to be keeping about the circumstances is suddenly part of a centuries long family story. (See Maryelizabeth’s review below.) Janni may also offer a sneak preview of her forthcoming Bones of Faerie sequel, as well as discussing her work for young readers, and recommended sources for further reading about the real and mythic components of Thief Eyes.

Volcanic activity among the snow and glaciers of Iceland made international headlines in March of this year. I believe the eruptions were of natural causes, but having read Thief Eyes, I am not 100% sure. Tucson, AZ, teen Haley and her father are visiting Iceland, in part to collect information for her dad’s research, but mostly because Haley is seeking answers. Her mother disappeared while in Iceland the previous summer, and the police have no answers. That’s probably because Haley and her mother are caught up in matters of mythology and legend, as the descendents of sorceress Hallegred. Soon Haley finds herself and her new friend, Ari, caught up in a tale of enchanted coins, berserker beasts and fire giants – and the choices she makes may not only affect her family and future, but the whole country. A fascinating excursion to a different land and its tales.
