Last year’s debut, Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, was a staff favorite (see Terry’s review below). MG is thrilled to kick off festivities at our 17th Birthday Bash with Beth Fantaskey and Jekel Loves Hyde (especially with its fantastic purple and green cover!). High school students Jill Jekel  and Tristan Hyde are the subject of jokes about their names before they decide to collaborate on a chemistry experiment recreating the famous Robert Lewis Stevenson story. According to family stories, they may actually be the descendents of the doctor and his deadly alter-ego – and with Jill’s father dead and her future at college in jeopardy, she is willing to open the forbidden locked box in her father’s den and risk everything. But will their choice lead to salvation, or to mutual destruction? Beth starts our day of author spotlights with Janni Lee Simner at 11:00 AM.

Jill Jekel has always obeyed her parents’ rules – especially the one about never opening the mysterious, old box in her father’s office. But when her dad is murdered, and her college savings disappear, she's tempted to peek inside, as the contents might be key to a lucrative chemistry scholarship. To better her odds, Jill enlists the help of gorgeous, brooding Tristen Hyde, who has his own dark secrets locked away. As the team of Jekel and Hyde, they recreate experiments based on the classic novel, hoping not only to win a prize, but to save Tristen’s sanity. Maybe his life. But Jill’s accidental taste of a formula unleashes her darkest nature and compels her to risk everything – even Tristen’s love – just for the thrill of being… bad.

Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey For fans of the Twilight series that thought they had nothing else to read, we beg to differ. Both Lori Fox and I loved this combination Vampire Romance/Vampire Dynasty/Teen Nastiness mixed with lots of humor and a great cast of characters. It turns out that Jessica Packwood and Lucas Vladescu have been pledged to each other since birth and this formed a pact that is critical to keeping vampire peace in Romania where the two families have co-existed for generations upon generations. The only problem is that Jessica is an American girl, raised by American parents (not vampires) and she was in the dark about this whole pact thing until Lucas showed up at school one day as a “foreign exchange” student. Needless to say his attempts at educating Jessica to her predetermined future are as completely lost on her and his understanding of life in America. And then Lucas discovers blue jeans and some of the fun of being an American Teen. And Jessica begins to read Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions. How to resolve the inevitable? You will enjoy the journey. It’s fun and readable and, could there be a sequel? -- tlg
