Meet Los Angeles physician / writer Dr. Linda Reid on Saturday, February 6, at 2:00 PM, discussing and signing her thriller, Dead Air. Ellsford College student Sammy Greene hosts a show on the campus radio station, and takes her budding career in journalism seriously. When Sammy discovers the body of an esteemed professor, and more mysterious deaths follow, she investigates. (See our website for a review.) Dr. Reid will not be accompanied by her writing partner, Dr. Shlian, but she will be in conversation with Barbara Whitesides. Barbara’s career as a radio newscaster and talk show host on some of the biggest radio stations spanned 35 years.   At present, she is a columnist for Northwoods magazine in Northern California.

Talk is cheap, but when this radio host takes action, she may pay the
ultimate price. An outspoken, brash, native New Yorker, Sammy Greene
isn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers at Ellsford University, her
ultraconservative New England college. Host of "The Hot Line", a
talk-radio show on campus station WELL, Sammy tackles the toughest,
most controversial issues facing Ellsford's students. When Sammy
discovers the body of Dr. Burton Conrad, one of Ellsford's most
esteemed professors, her journalistic drive kicks in and she sets out
to discover what happened to the beloved professor. But when several
Ellsford students mysteriously disappear, Sammy realizes she's
uncovered the seamy, terrifying underbelly of this prestigious
institute of higher education. With the entire campus in peril, and
demons from her past close behind, Sammy Greene must race to find
answers. Along the way, she'll discover some unlikely allies-and even
more unlikely enemies. If Sammy isn't careful, someone is going to make
sure that she signs off-for good.

Sammy Greene, junior at Ellsford University, is a journalism major and host on the campus radio station. A five foot nothing redhead, Sammy is tenacious, stubborn, and independent. After the suicide of a student, she is asked to do a radio program on the signs leading up to suicide. Because of her family history, Sammi does not want to think about the suicides. Plus she is more interested in covering the Reverend Taft and his Traditional Values Coalition. During the group’s last demonstration at the Nitshi Institute, research monkeys were released and one of the members was bitten. In spite of her preference, Sammy begins to research the suicide victims. She also interviews Barton Conrad, a popular teacher, after he receives the Ellsworth Teaching Award. Brilliant and uncompromising, Dr. Conrad becomes the next person on campus to commit suicide.
When Luther Abbott, the student bitten during the demonstration, is rumored to have disappeared, Sammy tries to connect the suicides to the Reverend’s group. Instead the investigation leads her to the campus clinic and a doctor at the Nitshi Institute. Someone tries to run Sammy over with a car. Photos taken by Sammy of the demonstration are stolen. Gus Papajohn, the head of campus security, believes Conrad’s suicide was murder. He warns Sammy to curtail her investigation. In spite of his warning, Sammy continues to probe into events on campus and investigate people tied to the suicide victims, the missing student, and the research conducted by Nitshi Institute.
As a character, Sammy appealed to me. She is a flawed, appealing young woman. The multi-layered story keeps the reader turning pages and, in spite of hints sprinkled throughout the book, the conclusion comes as a shock. This is a book is worth investigating.
