Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the
freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the
number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than a
thousand books have been challenged since 1982. The challenges have occurred in
every state and in hundreds of communities.

San Diego’s Fall Science Fiction convention welcomes author Guest of Honor Robert J. Sawyer (WWW.Watch, WWW.Wake, etc.). Other guests include: Mario Acevedo, Dani and Eytan Kollin, Todd McCaffrey, Greg van Eekhout, Linda Thomas-Sundstrom, Amy Berner, Kathleen Bradean, John De Chancie, Lynn Flewelling, Jean Graham, Samantha Henderson, Kirsten Imani Kasai, Shweta Narayan, Lisanne Norman, and Vernor Vinge. The convention will take place at the Town and Country Resort Hotel in San Diego from Friday, October 1 through Sunday, October 3.
