It is set in 1926\, nearly two decides before The Loud Adios\, which won the Private Eye Writers of America/St. Martin’s Press Best First PI Novel Award. Tom is working as a musician and a meat deliveryman when he receives word of a lynching in Los Angeles\, near the Angelus Temple of infamous evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson – a lynching which has not been reported by the police\, or the town’s established media.
