Elizabeth's Best

I tried writing this in the 3rd person and it just never sounded right, so here goes 1st. I read anything good, which typically includes mystery, literary fiction, and almost all children's picture books. I'd love to chat about YA or middle grade books, the Mysterious Galaxy Young Readers Group, and Twitter. You can also find me on our tumblr at http://mysteriousgalaxy.tumblr.com. Come say hi!

Currated Fiction

The introductory quote to Cosmopolis is telling, both in its simplicity and its strangeness: “a rat became a unit of currency” –Zbigniew Herbert

If you’ve ever read anything by acclaimed author Don DeLillo, you know that things can get a bit… weird. This is very much the case in Cosmopolis, a short (almost novella-length), surreal and searing trip with one billionaire stuck in his limo in New York City traffic. Sound boring? Hardly. Eric Packer, our protagonist, receives a series of visits from a variety of characters and these interactions provide glimpses into his psyche, which proves more fragile and dark than one might assume. As is often the case with DeLillo, the reader recognizes aspects of reality, but nothing is entirely what it seems. This is surely a book that will reverberate with you long after the last pages have been turned.

Although Cosmopolis was originally published several years ago, Robert Cronenberg’s screen adaptation is now playing in theatres. Read, then watch and tell me what you think!

Curated Fiction

This novel blew me away. This immensely talented writer draws you in slowly, and then immerses you completely in the world of Sunny (who is completely bald, but hiding under a wig) her husband Maxon (who is a robotics genius sent into space to prepare a robot moon colony) and their son Robert (who is severely autistic and goes by the name Bubbers). After Maxon goes into space, Sunny’s idyllic suburban life begins to unravel. Watch what happens when wigs come off, when husbands go into space, when children are “too special” for their school, when mothers are taken off of life support but still keep living. Shine Shine Shine shows us the many ways love will hold us together, even when our hearts are breaking.  This quirky debut will win you over.

Lauren Groff has been one of my favorite authors since I was introduced to her debut novel, The Monsters of Templeton. That story was utterly original and more or less flawless in execution, so when I saw an Advance Reading Copy of Arcadia, I snatched it up. I’ve since devoured the story, and passed it along to family and friends. Arcadia is a dreamy, poignant, and gorgeous story of an upper New York State commune. Arcadia (the place), rises and falls, during the main character, Bit’s life from child to adult, just as Arcadia (the novel), pushes us through the years with dexterity and grace. This is a beautiful story, told in a beautiful way, and I encourage you to read it; it will move you immensely.

I. Loved. This. Book. Geoff Rodkey is a debut author, and this book, the first in a series, hits it out of the park. I love the crazy, pirate-infested world, the unlikely friendships, and the rollicking adventure. The story begins on the island of Deadweather, where Egg lives with his family. His life is pretty normal, until his family takes a trip to neighboring Sunrise Island, a land of proverbial milk and honey. There, his father runs into a wealthy, mysterious man who will change everyone’s lives forever.  Flash forward several weeks and Egg is running for his life. I won’t fill in anymore details, you’ll have to pick this one up to find out for yourself!

Here’s what I like: San Francisco, sassiness, sarcasm, and sneaking around. (I also like alliterations.) Here’s what Lisa Lutz delivers in the latest Spellman novel: All of these things! Not to mention a whole host of great characters, witty one-liners, and enough booze to keep you sane while you deal with the antics of the most dysfunctional family in the private investigator business. This is my first Spellman novel, so I got to know everyone for the first time: Izzy, our delightfully droll narrator, her wacky family, and their associates all make for great entertainment. I’ll definitely be waiting in anticipation for the next one.

I do love a good mystery, and the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple never disappoints.  The latest in this series finds our heroine in remote Derbyshire, visiting a school friend and doing just a bit of sleuthing on the side. Just when she thinks there’s no foul play to be found, a body turns up, followed shortly after by Daisy’s long suffering husband, chief inspector with the Scotland Yard. A great pick to go with a chilly night and a cup of tea.

Just on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon lies a massive and infamously Impassable Wilderness, or, I.W., or, as the locals call it: Wildwood.

One afternoon, five crows abduct baby Mac, and our heroine Prue sets into the forest (with her friend Curtis eagerly tailing her,) to get him back. Prue is smart and strong, but life within the city of Portland has not quite prepared her or Curtis for the world they will find in the mysterious forest. There is a struggle within Wildwood for power and peace, between creatures familiar and mystical. Complimented by Carson Ellis' fabulous illustrations, this story unfolds as all good fairy tales should: with a little reality, a little magic, and a great adventure. I would recommend this book for all ages, especially those who recognize the author as the singer and songwriter for the band The Decemberists.

In the (not so distant) future, America is a harsh and desolate wasteland, ravaged by plagues. California is now a monarchy, and young girls are sent to insular academies where they are trained to become teachers and artisans… it is also here that they are taught to fear and revile men, except of course for their leader who is (allegedly) building a glorious city outside the (50 foot high) walls of their school. However, come graduation, our heroine Eve discovers what her school’s purpose really is, and this knowledge propels her into a dangerous adventure. Luckily, she is accompanied by Caleb, a young man who Eve finds to be not quite as repulsive and untrustworthy as her schooling has led her to believe. This is a great addition to the dystopian Young Adult genre, and a great read for fans of romance, adventure, and evil government conspiracies.

Although Colfer achieved vast popularity with his “Artemis Fowl” series, this Jersey noir is not for children. We follow Daniel McEvoy, ex-Irish military turned club bouncer, through the seemingly innocent streets of Cloisters, a town for those who want to get away from the hustle of New York City. But as we soon see, Cloisters has hustle of its own. Irish mobsters, a shady cosmetic surgeon, an upstairs neighbor whose lights aren’t all on (figuratively), and some really renegade cops are just some of the colorful and hilarious characters to be found. Perhaps best of all though, is our staunchly Irish hero Daniel; his inner monologues are elaborate and pitch perfect, varying from insightful humor to nostalgia and melancholy. If you want to be snatched up by a story and carried through twists and turns at breakneck speed by a middle-aged Irish man with a habit for getting into sticky situations, pick this up in August.

Part mystery, part self-discovery, and part coming of age, Once Upon A River is one of the most engrossing stories I have read in a long time. After a series of violent episodes in her small hometown leaves her alone at sixteen, Margo Crane sets off down her beloved Stark River in search of the only family she has left. Although she has grown up alongside the river, she soon realizes that the world is a different place than the childhood she has left behind. It seems that no one she encounters has any kindness to spare, and yet she never falters in her strength or resolve. Margo is one of the powerful female voices I have encountered in a long time: better at hunting, skinning carcasses and target practice than most of the men in her world. And although her story is not always a happy one, it is one that leaves you deeply empathetic. As a resident of Kalamazoo, Campbell’s lush description of rural Michigan is the perfect backdrop to this modern Huck Finn adventure.

A sweeping, haunting epic told through various points of view, Freedom is the story of a decaying American family, bogged down by the life they thought they wanted. Similar in scope to great Faulkner novels, Franzen’s work continues to hold a mirror to the American family.

Lively and off-beat, The Revenge Radioactive Lady is told through multiple quirky, charismatic points of view. Seeking, (as the title would suggest,) revenge, Mary Lou Ahearn is in the process of staking out a man whose “experiments” several decades before left her permanently altered. This novel is all at once comedic and dramatic, utterly likeable and completely readable.

Edgy and relevant, this novel by Laura Lippman is a character study through and through. She artfully portrays her characters, both victim and criminal, as they should be: multi faceted, and utterly real. Our protagonist, Eliza, is a complex heroine whose story will resonate with anyone who has ever wondered how one might live in the aftermath of a brutal crime.
