Michael's Most Wanted
Michael Seidman (MS) has been rightly accused of reading fantasy by the boatload. He also enjoys reading books written for teens and young adults. Actually, he'll pretty much read anything so long as it's good. When not reading, Michael watches anime, hangs out with his friends, sleeps, eats and sometimes even goes to class.
For your enjoyment, a quote from author Neil Gaiman taken from Good Omens:
“God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of the players, (ie everybody), to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.”
Some authors that Michael recomends without reservation are:
The Artemis Fowl #7: Atlantis Complex (Hardcover)
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Hyperion, 08/01/2010
Artemis has committed his entire fortune to a project he believes will save the planet and its inhabitants, both human and fairy. Can it be true? Has goodness taken hold of the world’s greatest teenage criminal mastermind?
Captain Holly Short is unconvinced, and discovers that Artemis is suffering from Atlantis Complex, a psychosis common among guilt-ridden fairies - not humans - and most likely triggered by Artemis’s dabbling with fairy magic. Symptoms include obsessive-compulsive behavior, paranoia, multiple personality disorder and, in extreme cases, embarrassing professions of love to a certain feisty LEPrecon fairy.
Unfortunately, Atlantis Complex has struck at the worst possible time. A deadly foe from Holly’s past is intent on destroying the actual city of Atlantis. Can Artemis escape the confines of his mind – and the grips of a giant squid – in time to save the underwater metropolis and its fairy inhabitants?
New York Times best-selling author Eoin Colfer delivers a knockout, fast-paced, and hilarious adventure in Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex, the seventh book in the blockbuster series.

The Desert Spear (Hardcover)
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Del Rey, 04/01/2010
Again, to quote Patrick...
Arlen, titular hero of The Warded Man, has been named the Deliverer by many in the North. The Deliverer, the man who will free the world from the demons that besiege it. But naming him thus may have been premature. There is another who would have that title. Jardir of the desert kingdom of Krasia has been honed since childhood to fight the alagai, the demons that rise from the Core every night. He is a fierce warrior and a leader of men ... the savior prophesied in the bones of his people. He will enslave the world to take back the night, and deliver the world.
The Desert Spear is at its heart Jardir’s story, as The Warded Man was Arlen’s. Moreover, with one notable exception, the characters made real in The Warded Man don’t even make their presences felt until around page 200. When they do, however, it’s like rediscovering old friends who you didn’t realize you’d missed. And when Jadir and his very un-Northern-like machinations are introduced into the mix, all hell breaks loose. Is Jadir the Deliverer of legend? Or is it Arlen? Both? Neither? Time will tell. The Desert Spear is a powerful sequel to last year’s favorite, The Warded Man. Brett builds on the excellence that was that first novel and continues the story of a world beaten to the brink of extinction. I can’t wait to see what he delivers to us next.

The Warded Man (Mass Market Paperback)

Published: Del Rey, 03/01/2010
As Patrick Puts It:
Demons rise from the Core every night to feast on any flesh foolish enough to not be hiding behind the only magic strong enough to defeat them – wards. For reasons long forgotten, these symbols, drawn on any worked surface, stop the demons cold in their tracks. Into this world are born three rather extraordinary people. Each will grow and excel in whatever they endeavor to do, each will suffer greatly, and each will play an important part in delivering the people from the evil that consumes them.
The Warded Man is the debut novel for Peter Brett and the first in a reported Demon Trilogy (though the author is on record campaigning for more). Not since Patrick Rothfuss’ The Name of the Wind have I been this pleased with a debut. The Warded Man is character-driven fantasy at its page-turning best. The three main protagonists are fully-realized people – both magnificent and flawed. Watch them grow up in a world designed to beat them down. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

As Patrick puts it,
"Think Harry Dresden in an old Richard Stark/Donald Westlake mystery thriller. Then add a bad attitude and the ability to kick some major ass. Then piss him off. Awesome, humorous, and partially insane."
--PMH
“The best B movie I’ve read in at least twenty years. An addictively satisfying, deeply amusing, dirty-ass masterpiece, Sandman Slim swerves hell-bent through our culture’s impacted gridlock of genres…it’s like watching Sergio Leone and Clive Barker co-direct from a script by Jim Thompson and S. Clay Wilson.”
--William Gibson
“Paced like greased lightning (watch out for friction burns on your turning finger), blend the movie-ish delights of tough guy noir and such smart-mouthgore-fests as “Reanimator” and “Army of Darkness”, seasoned by soupcons of Gaimanian romanticism and Koontzian sentiment.”

"Among the year’s most impressive debuts ... Lynch immediately establishes himself as a gifted and fearless storyteller, unafraid of comparisons to Silverberg and Jordan, not to mention David Liss and even Dickens. Lamentation by Ken Scholes is a fantastic debut novel with richly detailed characters and a plot full of devious political machinations that makes it undeniable that Scholes is a new dynamite force in fantasy.
--MS
“This is the golden age of fantasy, with a dozen masters doing their best work. Then along comes Ken Scholes, with his amazing clarity, power, and invention, and shows us all how it's done. No more ponderous plotting - Scholes barely gives us time to breathe. Yet he creates vivid characters, a world thick with detail, and wonders we've never seen before. I wish my first novel had been this good. I wish all five volumes of this series were already published so I could read them now.”
-- Orson Scott Card
“Ken Scholes is a hot new voice to watch for on the interesting frontier between science fiction and fantasy. He has a keen eye for action and a keen ear for the sounds of the human heart. Grab on now, because he's going places.”
--Harry Turtledove
"Ken Scholes' Lamentation is a whale of a first novel, set in a world where technological magic has come and gone, and come again, where organized religion has attempted to recover and restore lost knowledge, if with a certain amount of censorship, where no one is quite what they seem, and where parental ambitions for offspring are filled with deep love and sacrifices, along with double double-crosses, conflicting motives, and tragedy."
